For years I have struggled with my anxiety.
The kind of anxiety that has set me back in my life, I even dropped out of uni due to the overwhelming anxiety.
Poor mental health is not fun, but it can be made easier to bear!
In our post on Starting a Self-Care routine we look at what self-care is, and how you can practice self-care in less than 5 minutes a day (Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet!)
In this post, we are going to take it a step further. We are going to look at ways you can create a box of happiness to get you through those rough days.
A quick note before we start – I am a huge believer of feeling your feelings. If you are sad, feel it. If you are anxious, feel it. But in saying that, we also need the right tools to get us past those stages. That is where this self-care package comes in!
What is a self-care package?
It is exactly what it says on the box!
It is a package, designed by you, to use on those days that you are in dire need of self-care.
Whether you are feeling sad, having a bad mental health day, overwhelmed or just fed up with your toddler yelling at you over a banana (Y’all mums know what I’m talking about!), there are days you just need to hang out with yourself.
How will this list help you?
It will provide you with not only ideas for your own self-care kit, but it will also give you a reason as to why each product is on the list.
Products weren’t chosen by their looks, prices or “sellability”.
They were chosen because, as a suffer from severe anxiety, I know how good they are!
Do you have to buy any of these products? Absolutely not. I am showing you options, recommendations and awesome ideas for your self-care journey.
This list can also be used as an awesome gift guide if you need ideas on what to give someone who’s got everything!
Always remember – you can’t pour from an empty cup! So let’s fill your cup back up.
Top tips when building your self-care package
- Don’t skimp, unless you have to.
As soon as you tell yourself that you aren’t worth the cost of the worlds best blanket, you are kicking your self-worth to the curb.
We want to build your self-worth, not smoosh it!
If you are on a budget, absolutely stick to that!
- Think about your needs.
Do you need something to help you get past a depressive episode? Do you need to feel comfort? Do you prefer writing things out or using a colouring book to release tension?
These are all questions you need to ask yourself before you pick and choose from the list I am about to present to you (If I had my way, it would ALL be in my self-care box!)
These things are absolutely incredible for those who suffer depression or anxiety. I don’t know what it is about these wonderful blankets, but they help you feel at ease and comfort.
Many self-care package posts recommend a dressing gown or similar, but I say screw that. We want to feel that delicious weight, smooshing all of our bad feels out!
I have also heard from friends and family that these are amazing for calming kids with ADHD and Autism. However, you will need to do your own research on that one!

A journal or notebook
Out of all of the things listed here, I believe that this one is the most important one of them all.
This is the best way to truly get those feelings sorted. It will let you write whatever, or however, you are feeling. Writing things down can help you get to the source of your feelings or trigger.
You definitely don’t need a pretty notebook for this, a scrap of paper will do just fine. Although, a notebook you have bought and chosen for this special box can help you feel more willing to release your thoughts.
This is your special journal.

It can have a motivational quote on it, or just be something super cute that you adore. Anything that will make you feel happy.
My go-to mug used to be a little ladybird mug. I’d use it whenever I am feeling sad, or need to focus on something that bores the life out of me. (I no longer have it but am planning on replacing it soon, it always brought me so much happiness – even when I was ready to tear my hair out!)
This paticular mug is, I think, perfect for your self-care package!
Music & Headphones
Music can define our moods, and it can change our moods.
If you’re feeling happy, a sad song that brings back memories can quickly kill that happy mood. The opposite also applies!
When you are creating your self-care package, think about what music helps you, soothes you or, alternatively, helps you feel what you want to feel!
In addition to music, headphones are highly recommended over earphones.
What’s the difference?
Well.. Headphones go over your ears, rather than in. They are more comfortable and help create a smoother experience.
As a gamer, I now use SteelSeries headphones. For music only, purposes, you absolutely cannot go past Sennheiser! For years and years, I used their headphones and earphones. Their sound quality is amazing, even when you are looking at their lower-end products!
If good sound for your mood music is something you are interested in, make sure you check out the Sennheiser HD-280 Pro Headphones!
This one only works at a certain time of day, however, I think it is an amazing thing to add to your package.
Warm-white fairy lights are so so good! There is nothing more magical than listening to your favourite music in the warm glow of tiny lights.
Mood lighting can always help your mood, no matter how crappy you are feeling. It is like it transports you to a whole new world!
This doesn’t even have to go inside your package. You could set them up in your safe space and have them ready to go!
My recommendation would be to get battery-operated ones, it makes them easier to set up and the batteries in them tend to last for-ev-er!

If you aren’t new here, you are probably aware of how much I love essential oils!
They are so good for everything!
Sad? Use some Bergamot.
Low on energy? Peppermint and Wild Orange can help.
Need to get some calm in your life? Lavender, all day, every day!

Something to get you moving
This can be anything. It can be a Jane Fonda workout video from the 80s if that’s your groove. Or it can be a pre-loaded list of yoga videos (I follow Yoga with Adriene, she is incredible!).
So add something to your box (or next to it, if its something like a yoga mat!) and get it out when you are feeling low.
The movement doesn’t have to mean going for a run, as long as you stretch those muscles out and get that blood flowing. I promise it will make you feel better!
If you don’t already have a yoga mat, and it is something you are interested in starting (super recommended by me, it helps tame my anxiety so much!) then here is an excellent, affordable starter yoga mat!

Be sure to add some of your favourite snacks, chocolate, tea.. whatever helps you through the not-so-good times.
The chocolate itself is really good at helping to release feel-good hormones, so if you don’t live in a hot climate (it might melt!), then be sure to have it in your self-care package. If you do live somewhere where storing it isn’t ideal, keep a back up in the fridge!
A letter from you, to you
Again, this one is all you.
A good method of getting through the tough times is to read a letter you have written from yourself.
When you are having a good day, try to take the time to write yourself a letter and store it in your self-care package.
Remind yourself of how awesome you are (because you are!), tell yourself some of your best qualities and that you will get through the tough times.
This may sound silly, but sometimes all you need is self-talk to get you through some of the shittier times.
Other similar ideas:
Ask your close loved ones and friends to write you similar letters.
If that isn’t your thing, try finding relevant affirmations to write down and add.
