Valentines Day is around the corner, and if you’re stressed about coming up with new Valentines Day ideas then you’ve come to the right place!

To me, Valentine’s day is not just about love and showering your partner with gifts – it is also about reuniting with those you care about, including yourself.

That is why I have compiled a list of 22 Valentines Day Ideas that you can do or create on next to no budget!

Low/No Cost Date Ideas

A lot of us enjoy going out to a nice dinner in a fancy restaurant, but sometimes it just isn’t a viable option for various reasons.

Here are some low (or no) cost date ideas to help you have an amazing day without the worry of going into debt.

1. Beach Date

Beaches have long been seen as romantic. Head to your most beautiful local beach and enjoy a day with your partner.
You don’t even have to go during the day, go at night and have a gorgeous night swim!

2. Board Game / Video Game night

My fiance and I are huge gamers, we love spending time together gaming.
For us, this can be a much better bonding experience than going to a movie.
So get out your favourite Co-Op video games, or some conversation inducing board games and settle in for a night of fun!

3. Market Challenge

Of all of these Valentines Day ideas, this is my favourite!

The idea is to seek out a market (or garage sale) and set a small budget for each of you – something like $10 each.
The person who finds the best/quirkiest find for $10 or less, wins.

Spend time wandering around, chatting about your finds and enjoying time together.

What do they win? Well, that’s up to you! It could be anything from a chocolate bar to choosing the next date night. Plus, you get some awesome bragging rights!

4. Budget Date Challenge

Another challenge – perfect for those of us with a competitive streak (such as myself).

The idea of this one is to both organise a date for a set budget, usually anywhere between $20 and $50 each.

Go on both dates, and enjoy a fun day together on a minimal budget.
See if you can out-date your partner.

5. Massage

Either organise a massage by a professional or get some soothing massage oil and take time giving each other massages.
A great way to relax and reconnect.

6. Build a fort / indoor camping experience

Getting older shouldn’t mean that you stop building forts, it should mean that you build even cooler forts.

Pinterest has hundreds of amazing ideas on how you can quickly and cheaply put together an indoor fort, and I highly recommend that everyone does it at least once in their adulthood.

7. Check out your local ‘What’s On’

Community newspapers, group pages and bulletins are a great place to find out what is happening in your local area.
Here is where you’ll find some amazing ideas on what you and your partner can do – a lot of them are usually low to no-cost events.

8. Get a babysitter!

If you have children, you probably know that as great as the tiny humans are – they can take the calm out of Valentines Day.

Find a babysitter, ideally a free one like a relative or close friend, and spend the time doing what.ever.you.want.

It doesn’t have to be a date, it can honestly just be hanging out in bed all day together, sleeping. Whatever you feel is the most relaxing thing – but you’re banned from using this time to do housework!

Celebrate with your friends

Valentines Day with your significant other is great, but nothing beats spending time with multiple people that you love!
Here are some great ways to spread happiness.

9. Organise a BYO BBQ or Party

I love a good, simple BBQ or party. Valentine’s day is a great opportunity to organise either of these with your friends.
Making it BYO (alcohol, food, etc) makes it a budget-friendly way to get your peeps together and have some fun!

You could even combine this idea with the board/video game night – Bonus!

10. Double Date

The idea of a double date has long been classic and an almost cliche Valentines Day Idea, however, they definitely have a good reason for being on the list.

Double dates can not just help the bonding between you and your partner, but also with friends that you don’t get to see nearly enough.

11. Group Photo Shoot

In the world of selfies, sometimes it’s nice to get some proper photos of you and your loved ones.

You can either organise a professional photoshoot or find someone with the best camera and take photos with that. Choose fun locations such as playgrounds, beaches and cafes and have fun with it!

You don’t need a partner to enjoy Valentines Day

I am a big believer in loving yourself. You are just as important, regardless of your relationship status.

If you have no partner, don’t stress! I have some great ways to get some well-deserved you-time happening.

12. Netflix Binge

Most of us don’t need a special day to have a Netflix binge, but you can make this one extra special by ordering in your favourite take out, or stocking up on those chocolate treats you don’t usually splurge on.

13. DIY Spa Day

You don’t need to be part of the elite to enjoy a nice spa day.
It is easily achievable at home – and with DIY supplies. (Check out my DIY section for some ideas).

Pamper yourself. Have a 3-hour bath, wear that face mask you’ve had waiting for the right time, watch those trashy films we all deny loving while painting your toes – make it a day all about you and your relaxation!

14. Spend the day at home in your most comfortable clothes (or no clothes!)

This one is interchangeable with the previous two, but highly recommended!

Self-care is essential to our wellbeing, but self-love is just as important.
So get in touch with yourself, blast some of your favourite upbeat tunes, put on your birthday suit and enjoy some much-needed freedom!

15. Take the day off work

Not all of us have the luxury of taking a day off for self-care, but I think it is so important to do it when you have the opportunity!

Take a day off and care for your mental health – it isn’t as glamorous as a spa day but you can easily incorporate it in as well!

16. Start doing something you love, but have been putting off

It can be a small thing such as baking a triple chocolate mud cake (I’d love a piece too, please!), or a big project like a bookshelf restoration.

Anything you want, as long as it is something that you enjoy and know won’t cause you stress.

DIY Gift Ideas

Not worried about a date, but need some cheap gift ideas?
DIY gift ideas are a beautiful way to express your care for another person, as well as giving you something fun to do!

17. Take advantage of your skills

Crochet, Knitting, Embroidery, Woodwork, Glass blowing.. Whatever your hobby is, use it to your advantage!
Again – Pinterest has hundreds of ideas to suit just about any hobby, so go use your crafty powers in the name of love and a cute gift!

Here are some extra ideas:

  • Create a wooden keepsake box
  • Crochet an amigurumi if their favourite video game character
  • Knit them that beanie they don’t know they want
  • Cross stitch a quote from their favourite movie or song

18. Date Jar

A few years ago I did this with my partner and I was surprised that he thought it was a really good idea!

All you need is a small jar, pen and some small pieces of paper.
Write a heap of date ideas on it and whenever date night is approaching, pull one out at random and that is what you do for the date!

When I did this, I also left some blank paper for my fiance to write on, so he could have his own input in what we could end up doing.

Some date ideas to get you started:

  • Ice Skating
  • Theme Park
  • Hiking
  • Rock Climbing
  • Movie Date
  • Dinner Date
  • Zoo/Aquarium
  • Go Bar-Hopping,
  • See a new or favourite band

If you’re feeling extra creative, this date jar made with icy pole sticks is a great one to try out!
You can find the post at Ruffles and Rainboots. (Plus you will find even more awesome date night ideas!)

19. Coupons

The trusty love coupons.
Coupons are like the gift that keeps on giving.
You create coupons for future adventures and activities, and your partner can “cash them in” for said activity.

For example – “This coupon is valid for a 30-minute foot massage”

20. DIY Photo booth props

Photo booths have skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years, and the good news is that you don’t need a huge budget to do it!

All you need is a few free printables, a stick-like object (such as skewers or icy pole sticks) and a camera/phone!

The amount of fun photos and entertainment is potentially endless.
This is also another great thing to do for a BYO BBW!

Check out these awesome ones found at Baby Savers, that are perfect for the Valentines Day theme.

21. Candy/Chocolate hamper

The idea of spending a fortune on chocolate has become an acceptable one over the years, but it doesn’t have to be expensive!

All you need to do to create your own hamper is get hold of a cheap (but pretty!) basket/box and fill it with your partners favourite sweet treats!

All the sugary goodness for a fraction of the cost.

22. Love Letters

I know, I know. Love letters? How corny!

It doesn’t have to be corny though, promise.

I find that it is an excellent idea to write several short notes and let them go through them over time.

Get some envelopes and paper, and start writing down those sweet love letters to your significant other.

Some cute ideas:

  • When you first met
  • 10 Things you love about your partner
  • How you envision your future
  • 10 songs that remind you of them
  • 15 things that they do that makes you smile

23. Bake something delicious

If you enjoy baking, then now is the ideal time to make something yummy for you and your partner.

Try to think of something they enjoy (for my fiance, it’s donuts with pink icing) and recreate it.
